YZU students learn about tillage outside of classroom

About 40 students and their instructor Asst. Prof. Ming-Shan Kang, from Yuan Ze University’s micro curriculum of Working Holiday in Jimuling set up by College of General Studies, went out to experience the heavy work of soil cultivation, as well as, enjoy the beauty of countryside in Tamsui Kavalan historical and cultural Trails.

Kang said that the program of Working Holiday in Jimuling aims at offering students service-learning practice. Jimuling is a rural village, located in Gongliao Dist, and has fine distant view of Fulong beach, the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant and Jinsha Bay. YZU students followed the local tour guide, Hsueh-Yuan, Hsiao, to his beautiful hometown and learned farming fields. Hsiao taught the students how to break the ground with hoe and harrow; then brought water into farm for future rice transplanting. Even running out of steam, the students were still very excited when trying on farming works like cultivating soil for the first time.
