【Internship Recruitment】 2026 Summer Internship for University Students Pingtung Rescue Center for Endangered Wild Animals NPUST


I. Purpose

To cultivate professional talents in wildlife care, medical treatment, research, and conservation education; to strengthen professional resources for wildlife rescue and international cooperation; and to promote the concepts and knowledge of wildlife conservation.

II. Internship Categories and Vacancies

  1. Animal Care Division: 9 positions (3 for Macaques, 3 for Apes, 2 for Herpetology & Birds, 1 for Carnivores).
  2. Veterinary Medicine Division: 5 positions.
  3. Research & Education Division: 2 positions.

 

III. Internship Dates

From July 1, 2026 (Wed) to August 31, 2026 (Mon), totaling 44 working days.

IV. Working Hours

    • Animal Care: Mon–Fri, 08:00–12:00 and 13:30–17:30 (Weekends off).
    • Veterinary Medicine: Shift-based, 08:00–12:00 and 13:30–17:30 (Weekends off). Hours may be flexibly adjusted based on clinical needs.
    • Research & Education: Mon–Fri, 08:00–12:00 and 13:00–17:00 (Weekends off).

V. Location

Pingtung Rescue Center for Endangered Wild Animals, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST).

VI. Eligibility

    • Animal Care: University students interested in wildlife care and dedicated to service.
    • Veterinary Medicine: Veterinary medicine students (Junior year/3rd year or above) interested in wildlife rescue and clinical medicine.
    • Research & Education: University students interested in conservation outreach and environmental education with a passion for service.

VII. Internship Content

    • Animal Care Division:

      Divided into the Macaque Group, Ape Group, Carnivore Group, and Herpetology & Avian Group. Each group includes the following training components:

      1. Environmental enrichment for captive wildlife, lectures and literature discussions related to animal welfare.

      2. Captive management of wildlife.

      3. Food preparation, inventory, and kitchen organization.

      4. Enclosure cleaning and maintenance, including the use and upkeep of equipment.

    • Veterinary Medicine Division:

      This program is conducted in two phases.
      Phase 1 requires the completion of 80 hours of animal care training. Only after passing the evaluation may interns proceed to Phase 2, which consists of at least 80 hours of wildlife medical training.

      There is no fixed number of hours for each course in Phase 2; however, interns must pass the evaluation for each module before advancing to the next. Interns are also required to participate in the Center’s weekly reflection meetings or literature discussion sessions.

a. Wildlife Ecology & Behavior Recognition

Understanding ecological habits and behaviors of different wildlife; identifying potential health hazards caused by captive environments and methods for improvement.

b. Clinical Diagnosis, Restraint, & Anesthesia

Understanding and operating wildlife medical, restraint, and anesthesia equipment and techniques.

c. Diagnosis, Treatment, & Prevention of Common Captive Wildlife Diseases

On-site practical internship.

  • Research & Education Division:

  1. Understanding key issues in wildlife conservation.

  2. Training in guided tours and interpretation within the Center.

  3. Planning and organizing conservation outreach events, lectures, and summer camps.

  4.  Designing and producing educational materials and teaching aids for conservation promotion.

  5. Managing social media platforms, including content planning, filming, editing, graphic design, and writing.

  6.  Enhancing and arranging displays in education buildings and exhibition areas.

VIII. Application

  1. Application Period:
    From now until March 19, 2026 (Thu). Applications are accepted based on the postmark date.

IX. Admission Notification

The Center will begin eligibility review on March 20, 2026 (Fri) and will announce the list of admitted applicants by March 26, 2026 (Thu).
Accepted applicants must submit the Internship Confirmation Form by March 29, 2026 (Sun) (the confirmation form link will be included in the acceptance email).
Failure to submit the confirmation form by the deadline will be regarded as forfeiture of the offer, and the Center will begin contacting waitlisted applicants for replacement.


X. Additional Information

  1. The application form must be accompanied by a resume, autobiography, and at least one recommendation letter from a professor. Relevant experience may also be attached.

  2. If your university (or department) requires an internship grade, please attach the internship grade evaluation rules, evaluation form, and any related documents before the end of the internship.

  3. Because interns will engage in close-contact animal husbandry work, all applicants must undergo a Tuberculosis (TB) sputum culture screening test to prevent zoonotic disease transmission.
    The screening report must be submitted by June 22, 2026 (Mon). Interns may only begin the internship after passing the screening.
    One of the following three accepted testing methods may be used (choose one only). Please plan your testing schedule accordingly:

    A. TB Sputum Culture Test (Approx. NT$700; results require at least 9 weeks)
    B. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Test (Approx. NT$2000; results in 1–2 weeks)
    C. Interferon-Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) (Approx. NT$3000; results in 1–2 weeks; fewer facilities offer this test)
    (Chest X-ray or smear tests are NOT accepted.)

  4. Interns may apply for NPUST dormitory housing. Room availability will depend on the vacancies released by the men's and women's dormitories in June, as well as the order of reporting. (Dormitory fees will be announced separately.)

  5. Because the campus is large, it is recommended that interns prepare their own motorcycles or electric bicycles for convenience. Electric scooters are also available for rental on campus.

  6. Lunch may be purchased together with Center staff at one’s own expense. Breakfast, dinner, and vegetarian meals must be arranged independently.

  7. This internship is unpaid.
