YZU develops detection system for voice disorder

Prof. Shih-Hao Fang of YZU Department of Electrical Engineering with his students adopted deep-learning algorithm on thousands of sound cases from the database of Dep. Otolaryngology of Far Eastern Memorial Hospital and developed a system that can detect voice conditions successfully. The system can check voiceprint and detect the subject‘s condition of vocal cords as long as he/she pronounces the vowels to the microphone for one second.

Professor Fang said the detection system, according to patients’ acoustic features and clinical symptoms, can detect voice disorder automatically and find the people with underlying disease in advance. It not only saves medical resource, but also provides remote consulting service for people in rural or remote area with scarce medical resources and they will not have to travel to and from the hospitals frequently.
