Yuan Ze University Inaugurated the College of Medicine and Nursing – Marking a New Milestone in Smart Healthcare Education

Yuan Ze University held the inauguration ceremony of the College of Medicine and Nursing on October 2, 2025, symbolizing a significant step forward in the university’s development of smart healthcare education. The ceremony, presided over by President Ching-Jung Liao, was filled with enthusiasm as faculty, students, and distinguished guests gathered to witness Yuan Ze’s advancement toward a new milestone of interdisciplinary integration between science, engineering, and healthcare.

The establishment of the College of Medicine and Nursing originated from the initiative of Deputy Chairman Shu-Hsun Chu of Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, a public welfare enterprise of the Far Eastern Group, and received strong support from Chairman Douglas Hsu. Preparations began in late 2017, followed by multiple rounds of planning and review, and the Ministry of Education officially approved its establishment in the second semester of the 2024–2025 academic year. The college currently includes the Graduate Institute of Medicine, the Department of Nursing, and the Graduate Institute of Biotechnology and Bioengineering, which was reorganized from the College of Engineering. Looking ahead, the university planned to establish additional departments and institutes to build a comprehensive medical and healthcare education system that cultivates professionals with both clinical expertise and innovative thinking in smart healthcare.

As the sixth college of Yuan Ze University, the College of Medicine and Nursing marked the beginning of a new stage in the university’s development—from its traditional strengths in science and engineering to a model of interdisciplinary integration. By combining healthcare and technology, Yuan Ze expanded its research and development capacity in smart medical science and established an innovative education system that integrated engineering expertise with clinical practice.

President Ching-Jung Liao noted that Yuan Ze University had long been recognized for its strengths in science and engineering and had, in recent years, actively promoted interdisciplinary collaboration and social engagement. The establishment of the College of Medicine and Nursing represented a key milestone in the university’s institutional development. He emphasized that the university would continue to integrate expertise from engineering, information technology, management, and the humanities, aligning with national policies on smart healthcare and medical innovation. The goal was to cultivate professionals equipped with technological literacy, clinical reasoning, and humanistic care, demonstrating Yuan Ze University’s commitment to educational innovation and social contribution.

Dean Yun Chen explained that the College of Medicine and Nursing was guided by the educational philosophy of “Holistic, Intelligent, and Medical.” It focused on three major directions: interdisciplinary smart healthcare, practice-oriented innovation, and ethical literacy with a global vision. By combining the clinical resources of Far Eastern Memorial Hospital with Yuan Ze’s strengths in engineering and information technology, the college aimed to advance education and research in smart healthcare, precision medicine, and telemedicine—addressing the nation’s growing needs in intelligent health and long-term care.

In terms of facilities, in addition to promoting interdisciplinary courses and smart healthcare research at the Taoyuan main campus, the university also planned to build new dormitories and a Nursing Building at the Linkou campus in New Taipei City. This would provide a convenient learning environment near clinical training sites, allowing students to conduct practicums at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital and encouraging closer interaction and collaboration among faculty and students—achieving both academic–practical integration and resource sharing.

Dean Yun Chen emphasized that the College of Medicine and Nursing would continue to integrate resources across the university, promote interdisciplinary research, international collaboration, and social engagement, and strive to become a benchmark institution for smart healthcare education in Taiwan and beyond—injecting new momentum into the nation’s medical and health industries.
