On the evening of April 30, Yuan Ze University’s EMBA program hosted a celebrity lecture featuring Ms. Yu-Mei Chang, founder and chairperson of Ten-Chen Medical Group. Themed "My Startups, My Practice – The Slash CEO Yu-Mei Chang," the talk drew a full house of nearly a hundred faculty, students, and guests. Ms. Chang shared her multifaceted journey from pharmaceutical sales to founding a medical group, serving as a legislator, and advancing AI smart healthcare, resonating deeply with the audience.
A graduate of the School of Pharmacy at Kaohsiung Medical University, Ms. Chang is Taiwan’s first female entrepreneur to establish a regional hospital. During her tenure as a legislator, she was known for actively promoting medical policy and technology governance. In 2024, she was honored as one of the “Top Ten Female Business Leaders.” Since founding Tian-Cheng Hospital in 1990, she has leveraged outstanding marketing acumen and relentless execution to build a comprehensive health city, integrating healthcare, long-term care, and smart technology. Today, Tian-Cheng stands as the largest and most innovative private medical system in Southern Taoyuan.
In her speech, Ms. Chang used a light-hearted and humorous tone to recount the hardships of her early entrepreneurial days. Starting as a sales representative at Johnson & Johnson, she later ventured into hospital management and has remained committed to promoting AI medical care and digital governance. She emphasized that the future of healthcare lies in digitalization, service-oriented systems, community integration, and human-centered care. Using Tian-Xiang Hospital as an example, she showcased practical applications of AI in medical imaging, smart wards, remote diagnosis, and intelligent pharmacy systems—embodying her vision that "healthcare is a high-tech industry."
Beyond technology, Ms. Chang highlighted the importance of integrating medical care with eldercare. She shared how several long-term care facilities under her system implemented reminiscence therapy, daycare activities, and transportation subsidies to create patient-centered, community-integrated, and culturally enriched care environments. With wit, she remarked that “a hospital shouldn't only feel like a hospital—it should feel like home, a hotel, or even an art museum,” reflecting her artistic sensibility and aesthetic contributions to medical space design.
Ms. Chang also underscored the value of lifelong learning. After launching her business, she pursued further education in management at National Central University and National Taiwan University, later attending executive programs at Harvard, IESE, INSEAD, Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, and CEIBS. These experiences expanded her global perspective and multidisciplinary thinking. She praised Yuan Ze University’s EMBA for its academic spirit and "lifetime warranty" alumni support system, encouraging participants to continually grow and refine their skills.
She also noted that as early as 2004, she had partnered with Yuan Ze to establish the "Tian-Cheng Corporate University" to help physicians in her hospitals pursue EMBA studies. In 2024, she reaffirmed her commitment by signing a new Memorandum of Understanding with Yuan Ze University and donating NT$6.2 million to sponsor public-funded nursing students—demonstrating concrete actions to give back to society and advance nursing education.
At the start of the event, Ms. Chang graciously presented each attendee with a copy of her book "My Startups, My Practice – The Slash CEO Yu-Mei Chang," symbolizing her dedication to knowledge-sharing. Thoughtfully acknowledging the long day for EMBA students, she also provided traditional Hakka snacks and drinks, creating a warm and energized atmosphere. She emphasized that shared values across generations and interdisciplinary collaboration are key to sustainable business leadership.
Professor Huai-Chun Lo, Executive Director of Yuan Ze EMBA, remarked that the evening was more than just a lecture—it was a profound lesson in entrepreneurship and life. He praised Ms. Chang for exemplifying what it means to lead strategically and integrate across domains through decisive action.
